By Hazel Johnson. In writing his memories of Greeley, Lawton Luther categorized them as “Tadpole” (1907-1912); “Teen” (1913-1920); and “Adult” (1921-1931). In 1931, he went to Washington, D.C., where he worked in the U.S. Government Printing Office until his retirement.

Under “Tadpole Years an incident that stood out in his memory was the time he and a group of small boys decided to go swimming sans clothing, in the irrigation ditch that ran near the Luther residence at 910 6th St. They were having a great time until all the mothers swooped down upon them:

“They tanned our bare bottoms with hair brushes, switches and bare hands for swimming in the nude. That whipping was never forgotten.” A teen memory was joining the Boy Scouts with Rev.
