Idlewild was named by Ella Van Bramer in 1906. Here she established a homestead and tourist retreat, and soon after began construction on Idlewild’s first cabins.

Coykendall Homestead

Carroll Coykendall began homesteading here in 1904. He would receive a patent for eighty acres adjacent to the Idlewild homestead in 1909.

Turkington Cabin

A one room cabin owned by Edward Turkington, a pharmacist from Loveland.

Stewart Cabin

A cabin built in 1906 and owned by a Mr. Stewart from Loveland. Would later become the foundation structure of Idlewild Lodge.

Loveland-Estes Park Stage Line

From 1905-1906 the Johnson Brothers ran a stage line up the Big Thompson Canyon. Idlewild served as a relay station where horses could rest and where guests could enjoy a hot meal.

Riley Road

The Riley Road was completed in 1904. It was the first road through the canyon that went through the "narrows", which significantly shortened the distance and travel time from Loveland to Estes Park.

Idlewild Resort

Ella Van Bramer built a camping resort with at least nine fancy tent sites. Permanent tents on raised wooden platforms were rented by tourists, fisherman, and mountaineers during the summer months.

Ella Van Bramer built a milkhouse over Idlewild creek to store food for her guests. She also likely stored butter here, which she was producing commercially.
